Latest Old Mal Australia news
Hi folks, lots happening in the coming months as winter generally rolls in some awesome surf conditions.
June 2 is the date for this year’s Queensland Old Mal Titles, although entry forms are not yet available. The Victorian Old Mal Titles will be surfed on June 16 at Point Impossibles.
Also on June 16 is the Lost Tribe Rally at Crescent Head.
This year’s Snowy McAlister comp includes a Loggers Division and will be held on June 9-11. It will run with the Loggers Board & Judging criteria from Old Mal Australia.
The Head Judge ” Hendo” will be well versed on the criteria after working with us at the Curly Mal Jam and Crescent Head Classic.
Check out the Old Mal Australia website for entry forms and info.
Rob West Dunga Day 2012
The Rob West Dunga Day was yet again another success for 2012. We had good surf for the whole day with yet another jam-packed program and some excellent surfing.
Yet again the Original single/twin fin division was impressive to watch with some stand-out performances. The Old Mal division was battled to the last few minutes of each heat and the Timber Masters glided through some trying conditions.
The round robin two-round format allows all surfers to get out there and have a fair go, and we we are continually fine tuning it year after year.
Many thanks to late great Cocky Stannard, Spider Smith, Camel Gleave, Manso, Teddy Kabbout, Mick Hoskings, the ever important kitchen crew and all those involved in continually keeping the cogs going every year.
Many clubs were represented with the Sawtell Boardriders filling the field yet again. It is nice to combine predominately a shortboard club such as the Sawtell crew and the Yuraygir Boardriders with so many longboard clubs surfing a memorial for a great mate with the profits going to a great charity.
This year’s Club Tag Team Event was won by the Woolgoolga crew who narrowly edged out last year’s champs Sawtell.
The preso was held at our usual location – many thanks to Ian Reeves from the Wooli Hotel Motel, the crew from The Clarence Coast Holiday Real Estate, the Aqua Kats who yet again played up a storm on the night, The Sunpatch Surf Shop Sawtell, Joy West and the Cosmetic Gift Packs, Maclean Variety Meats who are continually an awesome sponsor for DSA, Spar Maclean, Chuzy Surf Maclean and all sponsors who helped make this day yet another outstanding success.
Results will be listed on the Old Mal Australia website.
Old Mal Australia Double Island Expedition 2012
A fatality occurred on the first day of the Double Island Expedition. We lost Peter ‘Cocky’ Stannard who suffered a heart attack in the water.
The next six days of this year’s rally was about coming to grips at the loss of our long-term mate.
Surf was consistent over the week with some days better than others, but generally as always midweek surf is uncrowded and always worth the drive.
The weather this year was a little indifferent with Saturday night festivities coming to a grinding halt just on sunset as a low pressure system buffered our beach camp location.
Beach camping had some positives and negatives with the women and kids looking forward to a return next year to refurbished Freshwater Campground.
A ceremony was held Saturday afternoon in honour of ‘Cocky’. This was attended by Karen and all of Cocky’s children which helped the healing process.
Many thanks to all who attended as this was a group effort that unfolded as it happened with no plan or structure and the end result was stunning.
Cocky’s spirit will always be with us all and Double Island is the sacred place.
Till next time,
Keep your Old Girls Wet
