State Titles have been Moved Forward this year and Entries are now Open on Surfing Queensland Web Site.
surfing Queensland is proud to announce the launch of a brand new event in 2020, the inaugural Queensland Surf Festival, which will be held from Friday, March 6th – Saturday, March 14th on the Sunshine Coast. The event will include Queensland State qualifying disciplines such as shortboard, longboard/logger, SUP surfing and bodyboarding – and will replace the traditional state title events of these disciplines. Queensland state teams will be selected from this event, to go on to surf at their respective Australian Titles.
The Sunshine Coast boasts some of the best beach breaks in the country, including Sunshine Beach, Coolum and Kawana. With great waves comes a rich history of surfing culture – the region producing several recent world tour surfers including Julian Wilson (Coolum, QLD), Keely Andrew (Mooloolaba, QLD) and Isabella Nichols (Coolum, QLD).
2020 world tour rookie Nichols is excited to see an event of such importance activated in her hometown.
“I love the Sunshine Coast, and having the QLD titles held there holds so much opportunity with a lot of great contest setups,” said Nichols. “It’d be great for the local community and hopefully give some of the local groms some motivation and inspiration as it did for me.”
“The QLD state surfing titles were always a great contest, it gave me a chance as a grom to compete with the older & more experienced girls in the open division, and with the prize being a wildcard into the trials for the first world tour event of the year, it was always a huge motivation!”
Surfing Queensland CEO Adam Yates is excited to be activating the event for the first time in the organisation’s history.
“Autumn is Queensland’s most favourable time of year for excellent waves,” said Yates. “Combine this swell window with some of the best beach breaks in the country and you’ve got a recipe for an exciting event. We can’t wait to crown all 50 of our Queensland champions together at this brand new festival on the Sunshine Coast in 2020.”
