With 18 teams registered again this year, it’s shaping up to be a fantastic weekend of good times.
The location for this year’s event will be Ann St, Currimundi (properly known as Ballinger Beach – located at the end of Buderim St, Battery Hill).
Forecast: SE winds on Saturday swinging to light easterlies on Sunday with a slim chance of a shower or two.
The good news is that hopefully this southerly change will see some swell build overnight and we will have some fun waves for the weekend.
- 50 min heats
- Max 3 waves per surfer
- Best 2 waves per surfer count for overall team score
- One surfer score double points for one wave. (Indicated by raising crossed arms above their head at the completion of wave)
- Water start for first surfer
- Tag to take place on beach/rocks (depending on conditions)

Sorry about the delay, folks – I have been OS.
As in past years our club supports the Alex Mal Club’s Hayden Winter Classic and will pay for one division entry per family membership. Financial members only, of course.
Things you need to do:-
1. Log on to the Alex website and print out an entry form.
2. Return the entry form to John Marsh ASAP.
– Drop it in John’s letterbox, please telephone him on 0407 137 879 for his address.
– Mail it to Caloundra Malibu Club, PO Box 105 Moffat Beach 4551.
– Bring it along to our next comp day on the 19th May.
– Scan & email it to John.
3. Please also send John Marsh an email: firstname.lastname@example.org confirming your entry. He is sending regular emails to the Alex Contest Director letting them know the names and divisions of our members.
4. It needs to be all finalised by our next comp day on the 19th May. That way we can organise one payment to the Alex Club.
Competitors, please note when completing your entry form, you may only surf in one main division, however you may also choose a specialty event (retro single fin/logger/old mal) in addition to your division. If you do choose to surf in a division plus a specialty event, you will be required to pay the $60 for the specialty event yourself. Please make sure you bring this $60 to our next comp day. See the entry form for further information.
Any queries contact or leave a message on John’s mobile 0407 137879.

Caloundra Malibu Club hosted the 12th annual Fun in the Sun Team Longboarding Challenge on Oct 20-21 at Happy Valley, Caloundra. We enjoyed sensational weather with clear skies and plenty of sun, and the location provided a sheltered pocket from strong northerly winds.
A fantastic turnout of 19 teams participated this year with five of them making the trek all the way from Bargara. Amore Coffee (2011 defending champions) were standout performers all weekend, but the Top Nuts gave them a run for their money this year, staging a hard-fought battle in the final to claim the Division A title.
Amore Coffee finished in second place in Division A, with the Missing Links (Alexandra Headland Malibu Club) third and Pacific Horrific (Pacifique Surfriders, Bagara) fourth.
The Division B title this year was claimed by the Smiling Assassins (Caloundra Malibu Club), closely followed by BJR Qld’s team in second. Congratulations to Pacific Pacifiers (Pacifique Surfriders, Bagara) and the Leftovers (Alexandra Headland Mal Club) who placed third and fourth respectively in the B Division final.
It’s a good thing we ride big boards, with most participants utilising their biggest log over the weekend to get the most out of the small clean sliders that were on offer. The atmosphere was fantastic: great company, good tunes and the smell of the BBQ and fresh coffee in the air. There were so many people involved in making the weekend the success it was — too many to list — great work team and thank you!!!
This event would not have been possible without the support and contribution of our sponsors. Big thanks to: Souls, Liive Vision, Classic Malibu, Clipsal, Dicky Surf, KFC, N&P Site Boring Pty Ltd, AJC Electrical Service, Beachbeat, AJC Metal Products, Global Surf Industries, BJR Queensland Pty Ltd, World Surfaris, Twin Disc Pacific, Stomp Wax, Amore Coffee, Hayden Surf Craft, Moffat Beach Mechanical Services, Da Bomb Surf Shop, Creatures of Leisure, Kanulock, Lea Printing, Caloundra Screenprints, Sunshine Coast Regional Council.

With hot and sunny conditions forecast, Fun In The Sun is ready to roll tomorrow at Happy Valley in Caloundra.
The wind is expected to get up later in the day and the surf may not be spectacular, but it should favour longboards at any rate.
You can view and download the competition draw right here.
First heat is in the water at 7.00am, so we’ll see you there for what promises to be a great weekend of surfing and fun.
Caloundra Malibu Club’s Fun In The Sun teams challenge kicks off this Saturday, Oct 20.
For all the details on this fantastic surfing event, click here.
John Ryan trekked over the border for the Crescent Head Old Mal comp recently. Here’s a few of his choice snaps – thanks John.
Another great day at Neill St Dicky Beach on Sunday 16th for the September comp. A fine and sunny day by the beach with some nice contestable waves on offer.
Conditions held up long enough to run both rounds.
Very important points were up for grabs with the divisional and club championship nearing the pointy end of the season.
With 2 rounds remaining, there is still plenty of interest in all divisions.
The top 6 to contest the 2012 club championship over the last 2 rounds has been finalised. Congratulations to Peter Rea, Jeff P, Kathryn H, Brett R, Steve M and John M.
Check out the points tables to see how you are positioned.
The four-way club comp planned for Noosa on Sunday 26 August has been postponed due to lack of surf.
Stay tuned for a new date.
For those who are heading up to Noosa on Sunday for the four-way club challenge, here’s some info on the day from the Noosa Malibu Club website:
Just a quick rundown on proceedings for Sunday 26th August. We meet at 7:30am at Lyons Park car park (bottom of the hill just before Hastings St)
Options will be 1st Point, Noosa West (access 12) or Castaways.
First heat 8:00am – All heats will be drawn from the hat.
To allow Pacifique time to get home before dark we want to finish around 1:00pm then a short presentation of the fridge trophy ( it will need to have no beer left in it so we may need some help to empty it)
Depending on numbers we should have either 15 x 20min heats or 20 x 15 min heats , five hours. Surf conditions will dictate this as well. Teams that need surfers to surf again to make up the numbers will have their surfers names drawn from the hat so there are no doubling up of the best surfers. Women and girls only heats will be drawn up. If there are extra ladies who want to surf they will go into the mens heats so get as many girls in your team as you can. Jnr boys will surf in the mens heats.
Judging will be – Surf a Heat – miss a heat – judge a heat. Three judges and one spotter
Noosa will supply a BBQ lunch for everyone at no charge so please ask your members not to double up as we are attempting to cater for the correct numbers.
If all clubs could give us an idea of numbers in their teams by mid next week it would be a great help for catering.
See you all on the 26th.
The July comp day was held at Moffats on Sunday 8th. The cold, bleak, overcast morning added to the lethargic mood of the crew hoping to get out there and rip. However, the BBQ breakfast and tea and coffee got the bodies working.
An incoming tide, improving surf quality and a touch of sun brightened everybody’s enthusiasm, and things were looking good for a great day. Pick the right wave and the good scores followed. The two rounds were surfed – check out the updated points table for the latest standings.
The only mishap was a nasty dislocated finger to our points leader, Peter Rea. I’m sure Peter will be back very soon. That’s the bad news. The good news is, now is a great time to be surfing the Caloundra area. “Surfing with him is like surfing with another 12 people” – can’t dob in the person, but this quote was overheard on Sunday.
The 8th Wrecks and Relics was held at the Access 11 Noosa Main beach on June 23-24. A large crew from the club trekked north to the very popular event hosted by the Noosa Malibu Club.
After Friday night’s friendship renewals at the Reef Hotel, Saturday dawned and a typical small winter swell greeted the surfers.
Good results in the first round and re-qualifiers saw Kim S, Greg C, Frank H, Glenn F, John C advance to Sunday’s Over 50 semi-finals. Jeff P reached the Over 55 semi-finals, while John R and Peter R made the Over 60 semis.
Sunday dawned, not too brightly for some – young grommie Glenn F’s 50th birthday celebrations might have had something to do with it. However, a fine breakfast at the beach of muesli, yoghurt, fruit, bacon and egg roll, tea and coffee certainly helped. Thanks to the host club and their band of willing workers for the breakfasts and lunches for the two days.
The two finals spots up for grabs from each semi were difficult to come by. The old guys still have that fierce competitive drive once they hit that water, so any finals spot was well earned.
Congratulations to Kim Smith for making the Over 50s final and 6th place. To quote Kim, “my first surfing trophy since about 1978”.
Club Championship and Divisional points have been updated after last Sunday’s June Comp Day.
Check out where you stand.
Some great results for CMC members at the Queensland Longboard Titles 2012 held recently on the Gold Coast.
Kathryn Hughes – 3rd Open Women’s Final
Dean Chelin – 4th Open Men’s Final
Peter Rea – 3rd Over 45 Men’s Final
Kathryn, Dean and Peter have been selected in the Queensland team to contest the Australian Titles at Port Macquarie in August. Congratulations guys, great effort.
The U18 title was won by Eli Steele. He is the current Australian U18 shortboard champion. Next time you go to Cafe by the Beach check out the ‘Carol Marsh Memorial Encouragement Award’. Eli was our first winner back in 2005.
